Advantages of regular PAT tester calibrations

Calibration is essential to ensure that your Portable Appliance Tester provides accurate results, which in turn reduces the risk of errors in the testing and tagging process. If a PAT tester isn’t calibrated properly, results will often become skewed and the tester can pass items that should be failing and vice-versa. However, the benefits of calibration go beyond just accuracy. Here are some of the advantages of regular calibration:

  • Improved Reliability: Calibrated PAT testers offer consistent and reliable performance over time. This reliability will give you more confidence when you’re out testing and tagging, therefore minimising the need for retests and reducing downtime in operations.
  • Cost Savings: As previously mentioned, regular calibration helps detect and rectify minor issues early, preventing them from snowballing into costly repairs or equipment failures. Additionally, accurate testing results help identify faulty appliances promptly, allowing for a faster, more efficient, & safer testing and tagging process.
  • Compliance: The AS/NZS 3760 specifically mentions the importance of getting your Portable Appliance Tester calibrated. By complying with these requirements, you can maintain your business’s reputation and meet legal and regulatory obligations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) Calibrations

The AS/NZS 3760 standard states that regular intervals are required to ensure your PAT tester is working accurately. Various factors influence the frequency of calibration such as usage intensity, environmental conditions, and what the manufacturers recommend. In saying this, the general consensus is that Test & Tag Machines will generally require a calibration every 12 months.

No. Calibration is a check of the the measurement capability of the tester to ensure it is accurate and meets standard specifications.

A repair involves fixing a fault or malfunction in the device.

If a fault is identified during calibration then we may be able to offer a repair service or just advise and report on the relevant issues.

We include basic adjustment where possible at no additional cost.

This is only possible where manufacturer’s share adjustment procedures and processes with external laboratories.

Metrel meters for example, absolutely we can adjust them to improve measurements where required.

Some other brands do not give out adjustment procedures to external laboratories forcing their customers to use a their own ‘authorised’ lab/s when adjustment or repair is needed.
For any instrument where this applies we can only report on the ‘actual measurements’, meaning our calibration report may indicate some ‘failed’, or ‘partial fail’ calibration points

No – There are some basic instruments that don’t display a measurement value, but rather just show pass or fail indication.

Those instruments we can calibrate still, but we can only offer a ‘traceable calibration’ rather than a ‘NATA accredited calibration’

NATA endorsed certificates should give you confidence in the quality of measurements and calibration report, while giving you peace of mind that the results can be trusted as a NATA endorsed calibration certificate can only be issued by a NATA accredited laboratory.

It means that the calibration laboratory has been assessed and audited in accordance with the international standard “ISO 17025 – General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories”.  This standard requires staff are technically competent and properly trained, the lab uses only validated procedures, and their references and standards have unbroken traceability chains to International Standards. The lab also has quality management policies and procedures in line with those followed in ISO 9001.

  • A calibration certificate, bearing the NATA emblem
  • A calibration sticker on the device itself
  • Free basic instrument adjustment to improve performance where possible
  • Reporting of results, both prior to and following adjustment if required
  • Method selection and statement of compliance following strict criteria

*Correct at time of writing, subject to change without notice, we encourage you to contact us for current pricing on your PAT tester model

  • Most of the time we can provide a quote/estimate even without seeing the instrument in person.
  • Some instruments may require an inspection prior to formally quoting
  • Be aware a quote is only an estimate, the quote may need a variance after we have inspected or even begun the calibration procedure, for example if we find damage or faults with the instrument that were not expected and not within the initial scope of the job.
  • We will contact you with a revised quote before proceeding further where necessary.

We have a minimum fee of $80 +GST, this applies as a minimum inspection fee and also a minimum calibration attempt fee for any instrument processed through our facility.

  • Instruments that fail a calibration are generally still chargeable up to the full quoted price, we may at our discretion charge a lesser fee depending how much time and effort was spent working on the instrument.
  • For failed instruments if possible we may be able to offer a repair or replacement
  • Some instruments may carry a larger minimum fee, for example in cases where we need to send the instrument to a 3rd party for assessment, in these cases before moving forward we will quote an elevated minimum fee to cover the associated freight costs and 3rd party assessment fees.

Typical internal flow of a calibration

Typically, the whole calibration process is completed within 1 week.

  • This does vary and depends on various factors, but more often than not we are actually quicker.
  • Your instrument will go through various stages during a typical calibration, we are efficient at moving it between various stages in the process but sometimes delays can happen, we will inform you if we expect any kind of delay.
  • Some calibrations may be sent to a 3rd party partner or supplier, in which case they will carry a longer than our standard turnaround time. We do, however, strive to provide the very best and accurate estimate of turnaround time at time of quoting.

For expedited ‘same day’ or ‘next day’ service, Zedflo is the best calibration service to look to!

We are always busy and do have a constant stream of work in our laboratory, instruments are usually worked on in the order they are received, and then in order of confirmed approval to proceed with quote, but for a fee your instrument can jump the queue when you require a fast turn around.

The fee will vary, and is subject to availability, but as a typical guide:

  • Next business day turn around add 30% to the normal fee
  • Same day (next on bench) turn around add 50% to the normal fee
